smithtek.net : Open-source solutions

Our primary purpose is to demonstrate what can be done, without too much difficulty, with a spare computer, broadband connection, registered domain, Linux disc and empty pockets.

Public domains

Some of the public domains residing on our servers that might be of particular interest include: casa de adams which deals in antiques, rarities and collectables; linuxselfhosting which will be a resource center when complete; mygoddamnbusiness which is our aptly named development workstation; upshitcreekagain is our corporate shitlist; devilsbox will, one day, cover violins and fiddling; and lastly, thepenguinbox is still undetermined.

User websites

Our users with Unix shell accounts have the capability to host public websites in their /~home directory (folder) and encompanying all the power of MySQL, PHP and CGI. User websites can be accessed via the standard URL format of: http://smithtek.net/~username whereas username is your Unix login preceeded by a tilde (~). To the right are links to several examples of user websites.

Linux migration on schedule

Despite some early setbacks, such as hardware failures and subsequent data loss, we are still on schedule with our initial projection of two years for completion. That's not to say that there isn't still a large amount of unfinished work, however. For one, we still have no functioning mail servers implemented. Those are the most complicated to configure and require extreme caution to provide the security needed so that our mail servers won't become hijacked spam-relayers.

Our Philosophy ...is to demonstrate how feasible it is to run multiple robust home and/or business sites, even on seven-year-old systems such as ours, with no investment other than a spare computer or two, a router with broadband connection and some free time.

Linux Self-Hosting for Other Dummies As a public service, one of our domains is reserved as a free beginner's resource guide to self-hosting.

Multi-domain SSL Support with Apache 2 We've found a method to get Apache 2 working with SSL on multiple domains. Normally, one has to use Apache 1.3 to accomplish this but it's as simple as placing the non-secure (http) and secure (https) web servers on separate computers then configuring the router to send data to the appropriate internal IP. Although it's not entirely a seamless solution, it's a better alternative for our needs here.

Primary Domain Controller Borrowing a few tools from Mandriva Enterprise Server allows us to easily add PDC functions to LAMP-based systems. LDAP + Directory Services form the foundation.

Disclaimer Noticesmithtek, smithtek domains, and smithtek.net are not affiliated with any (possible) others of the same names. They're simply collective names given to domains supported on our servers and smithtek.net is simply the DNS name chosen to encompass this entity. We have no affiliation with any (possibly) other smithtek.* domains, either. If ever in doubt, feel free to request pgp verification.

Public Encryption We recommend all users take the time to learn about PGP / GPG then to create a keypair for themselves. Our public keys can be found through this link.
